We are British now residing in Spain, can anyone answer the following
query.
We brought out to Spain our Toyota Yaris which is british registered
and standard left hand drive. We believe that it is not possible to
have our car MOTd in Gibraltar as we are not residents.
Our vehicle needs its MOT in Jan next year, would it be possible /
viable to have it re-registred in Gibraltar whilst carrying on living
in Spain. This is to save driving the car back to UK for it's MOT.

I suspect you'd need to have your car registered in Spain if that's where
you're living. If you can't have it MOTd in Gib because you're not
residents, why should you be able to register it there? What keeper's
address are you going to give? How wold you explain the G plates to the Sp
authorities if you're resident in Spain? How would you get your car insured
to spend all its time in Spain if it's Gib registered?

If you are resident in Spain you need a Spanish car.

UK cars in Britain
Spanish cars in Spain
Gibraltar cars in Gibraltar

drive it back where it belongs, sell it and buy
a legal and safe car in Spain.

The Gibraltar MoT test is for local cars owned by
persons resident in Gibraltar.

Mr Watt is not rude- he merely speaks in words of one syllable. That aside,
by your own words you are now resident in Spain. Therefore so should your
cars.

I think you need to separate the concept of the physical vechicle and
the registration.

What Jim was meaning was the international concept is that cars are
registered at home - unlike, say, boats and yachts for which it is an
international industry.

You say the car in question is her pride and joy, well either:

1. Get it reregistered in Spain.
2. Take it off the road.

Alternativly, if her attachment is to the type of vechicle rather than
the specific one, then try and find one which is designed for driving
on the correct side of the road for the country it will be in.

Personally, my own view is that I don't think vechicles should be
allowed to be driven on the opposite side of the road from the one
they were designed to operate on, - unless the specific model in
question has been specifically addressed and deemed suitably safe for
that.

That should have been 'assessed', not 'addressed'.

I fail to see how telling you facts is 'ignorance'

As Darius says, driving British cars in Spain is dangerous,
as is the reverse.

You should consider the health of your wife and other road uses
more and get her a proper, legal car and not look for quick
fixes which do not exist.

Dear Brian & Pamala,

Mr.Watt is right. Its as simple as watt he wrote.

If you wish, become a Gibraltar resident and have the car registered and
MOTed there. Although, as mentioned afore, you would need an address
and (maybe) some form of employment.
