Anyone here able to give me a rough guide as to the cost of renting an
apartment in Gib? I have just accepted a job there and I am trying to get a
feel for the cost of living. It has been mentioned to me that I should look
for somewhere in Spain. Is that really the best option?

That rather depends on your circumstances, if you have children that
need to go to school, there are advantages in living in Gibraltar as
the system is totally compatible with the UK. The Spanish school
system although good, is quite different, and of course, in Spanish.

Housing in Gibraltar is small, expensive and difficult. If I were you
I'd ensure the company offering you a job sorts that out.

Spain has space and prices are lower, however you have the problem
of commuting and having a frontier between where you live and work.

If something rattles their cage, the Spanish Government can impose big
queues, and so might air exercises as the road runs across the runway
and Mr Tornado does not give a toss about you waiting to cross.

For a single person its fine, and many people do it, but others say
its a pain in the arse. At present I hear there are more properties
in the immediate area in Spain than renters.

Thanks Jim. The company will sort me out for the first few months, so I
will get a chance to have a good look around. I dont like the sound of the
border hassles, especially if it can add a couple of hours to what I
already expect will be a long day.

Do you know of anywhere I can get a list of places for rent? just to see
typical prices. I have not been able to find too much online, mostly
holiday homes and that type of thing.
